Because this is definitely not oppressive. I went to an Eastside school & am tryna make it. Where we live doesn’t define our potential, but what the political system gives & takes from our education & zoning area contributes to where we end up.
Gist: Republican candidate for California governor was trying to make a point about valuing our educational system more, but used East Side San Jose as an example, stating stereotypes rather than facts. Claimed that our low-income schools should keep vocational schools and work study available because we’re incapable of accessing Berkeley or most Universities at that. Where is Poizner coming from?
I worked with Oakland high school kids last summer during the LIFTED program at UCSC, who came from low income schools & families and we asked them what’s stopping them from coming to college. One common response was, “Everyone was telling us we’re not gonna make it,” or “I’m not made for college.” They even knew what was oppressing them. The lack of motivation from our state & teachers need to be addressed & give these kids the extra push. We did. They all applied or intend to apply to colleges.
EVERYONE DESERVES A GODDAMN EDUCATION. It’s a right, not a privilege.
